His comments, while potentially offensive to some, were a refreshing display of candor for others.
In a letter to American bishops, Pope Francis criticized President Trump's immigration policies, calling his plan to deport millions of migrants a "disgrace". The Pope urged the faithful of the Catholic Church "not to give in to narratives that discriminate against and cause unnecessary suffering to our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters." The Pope, who has held his position since 2013, has been a vocal critic of Trump's stance on immigration, even going as far as to label Trump's views as "not Christian" during his first White House campaign in 2016.

In response to the Pope's letter, Tom Homan, a lifelong Catholic himself, retorted, “I’ve got harsh words for the Pope.” He added, “He ought to fix the Catholic Church and concentrate on his work and leave border enforcement to us.” This direct response from Homan was a clear indication of his disagreement with the Pope's stance on immigration.

The Pope's views on immigration are not the only issue that has drawn criticism. Many, including Homan, believe that the Pope's socialist leanings, rooted in the Liberation Theologies of the 1980s, are problematic. As a reporter for a Catholic newspaper in the 80s, I witnessed firsthand the influence of Jesuit thinking on protests by militant nuns, peace and justice activists, and Jesuits like the Berrigan brothers.

According to RedState, during the 80s, stories about pedophile priests were regularly reported by Catholic wire services. These stories were published, despite the potential backlash from the Church. However, when it was revealed in recent years that the Church and the Vatican were involved in moving pedophile priests to other parishes, many, including myself, decided to distance themselves from the religion.

The Pope's criticism of Trump's deportation plans is particularly troubling considering the Vatican's own strict rules regarding those who breach its walls. According to a Vatican document, violators can be fined between 10 and 25 thousand euros and may face up to four years in jail. This apparent hypocrisy is a clear example of the double standard that the Jesuits taught me about during my philosophy classes at Rockhurst College. If one applies a double standard in their moral convictions, their principles are merely situational and prone to manipulation by events and others.

Homan's response to the Pope was not only appropriate but also a perfect rebuttal to the Pope's criticism of Trump's immigration policies. In my opinion, the Pope's inconsistent stance on immigration makes him a "squish" and his views should be disregarded. The future will reveal who will emerge as the next influential voice in this ongoing debate.
