According to Salon, this move is presented as an effort to "broaden access" to newer media entities that have not previously had office space in the Pentagon. However, the selection of incoming tenants suggests a preference for conservative outlets that provide favorable coverage of President Donald Trump and his administration. Following the departure of the aforementioned outlets on February 14, the Pentagon intends to allocate their offices to the New York Post, Breitbart News, and One America News Network. Notably, the Huffington Post, which will replace Politico, is the only incoming outlet not predominantly conservative in its reporting.

The Department of Defense has clarified that press credentials are not being revoked, despite the eviction of legacy outlets. Ullyot stated, "The outlets that vacate the spaces that are loaned to them by the Secretary will remain as full members of the Pentagon Press Corps. They will continue to enjoy the same media access to the Pentagon and will be able to attend and cover briefings."

In a statement to Salon, NPR emphasized its dedication to covering the Trump administration and urged the Pentagon to expand office space for the media. "NPR urges the Pentagon to expand the offices available to press within the building so that all outlets covering the Pentagon receive equal access."
