In a bold move to restore fairness in women's sports, the U.S. Department of Education has urged the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to "correct the records" of female athletes who have been unjustly stripped of their titles and awards by male competitors identifying as women.

This call to action, issued on Tuesday, is directed at NCAA president Charlie Baker, former Republican governor of Massachusetts, and Bob Lombardi, president of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

According to The Federalist, this development follows the NCAA's decision to discontinue the practice of allowing males to compete against females in sports. Candice Jackson, Education Department Deputy General Counsel, lauded this change, attributing it to the decisive leadership of President Trump. "Because of President Trump’s bold leadership, men will no longer be allowed to compete in women’s sports regardless of how they identify, and the NCAA has correctly changed its tune on its discriminatory practices against female athletes," Jackson stated. She further emphasized the need to "restore athletic records to women who have for years been devalued, ignored, and forced to watch men steal their accolades."

This request for record correction implies that athletes like Lia Thomas, who controversially claimed the 2022 NCAA Division I national championship in 500-yard freestyle swimming, would have their titles revoked. Thomas, a male athlete, competed against and defeated female swimmers, sparking widespread debate about fairness in women's sports.

The Department of Education's request aligns with President Trump’s executive order, “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.” The directive calls for the NCAA and NFHS to develop policies reflecting the “clear, fact-based language” in Trump’s “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government” order. The order was enacted to prevent serious injuries to female athletes from larger, stronger male competitors.

The NCAA, with its 1,100 member institutions and over half a million student athletes, is entrusted with the mission to “[p]rovide a world-class athletics and academic experience for student-athletes that fosters lifelong well-being.” The Department of Education asserts that this mission will remain compromised until the NCAA fully commits to fairness for female athletes—past, present, and future. Similarly, the NFHS, responsible for drafting the rules for high school sports, is urged to prioritize the health and safety of millions of high school students.

The Department of Education acknowledges that the damage caused by years of policies conflating sex with a fluid concept of “identity” cannot be undone merely by returning to objective, factual sex classifications in athletics. However, recognizing the harms done and injustices committed by such misguided policies and reversing their effects will restore a genuine commitment to girls’ and women’s equality of opportunity in athletic competition across the United States.

In a further effort to protect women’s sports and the rights of women and girls at school, the Trump administration reversed the Biden administration’s attempt to redefine “sex” to include a wide range of claimed gender identities under Title IX civil rights law. This policy reversal occurred after a U.S. district court blocked the Biden rules nationwide just prior to Trump taking office. This move underscores the Trump administration's commitment to preserving the integrity of women's sports and upholding the rights of female athletes.
