A senior official from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) disclosed this development, indicating that the IRS could soon play a role in immigration enforcement efforts alongside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
As reported by Fox News, the DHS has formally reached out to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, requesting the deployment of IRS agents to support ICE operations. The senior DHS official expressed confidence that this request would receive approval.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who authored the letter, emphasized that President Donald Trump has instructed her department to "take all appropriate action to supplement available personnel to secure the southern border and enforce the immigration laws of the United States." This directive includes leveraging the agency's authority to deputize federal employees for immigration-related tasks.

In line with Trump's directive, DHS has already established collaborations with various law enforcement entities. These partnerships include components of the Department of Justice, members of the Texas National Guard, and officials from the Texas Attorney General's Office. "Even with these resources available, more can be done to fully implement the Executive Order," Noem stated. She further highlighted that the Department of Treasury possesses qualified law enforcement personnel who could assist with immigration enforcement, particularly given recent expansions in the IRS workforce and budget.

Noem outlined the need for IRS agents to join interagency task forces, aiding in the construction of complex cases that intertwine tax, immigration, and money laundering charges. Additionally, she requested their involvement in targeting employers engaged in illegal hiring practices, investigating human smuggling and trafficking networks, asset seizures, contract oversight, and the apprehension, detention, and removal of individuals.

"This letter requests that you make qualified officials from the Department of the Treasury available to work with ICE and that you consent to those officials being deputized to perform immigration functions," Noem wrote, expressing gratitude to Bessent for the potential collaboration in advancing Trump's immigration agenda.
