However, the reinstated name, "Fort Bragg," now pays homage to Army Private First Class Roland L. Bragg, a decorated World War II veteran, rather than its original namesake, Confederate General Braxton Bragg.
According to Breitbart, Pentagon Press Secretary John Ullyot issued a statement saying, "Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signs a memorandum aboard a C-17 en route from Joint Base Andrews to Stuttgart on February 10, 2025, directing the renaming of Fort Liberty, North Carolina, to Fort Roland L. Bragg.

Born in Sabattus, Maine, in 1923, Pfc. Bragg enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps. He was stationed at Fort Bragg during World War II and fought with distinction in the European theater of operations. Pfc. Bragg was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, and the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during the Battle of the Bulge. In the midst of fierce fighting and under harsh conditions, Pfc. Bragg saved a fellow soldier's life by commandeering an enemy ambulance and driving it 20 miles to transport a wounded comrade to an allied hospital in Belgium.
For nearly a century, under the names Camp Bragg and later Fort Bragg, tens of thousands of soldiers have trained and deployed in defense of our nation. Fort Bragg has a long and proven history of equipping, training, and preparing our soldiers to fight and prevail in any operational environment. This directive honors the personal courage and selfless service of all those who have trained to fight and win our nation’s wars, including Pfc. Bragg, and is in keeping with the installation’s esteemed and storied history.

Hegseth has prioritized the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives launched under the previous administration, aiming to restore the focus back on warfighting and merit.
