The idea has sparked a flurry of speculation, with some questioning the seriousness of the proposal, while others suspect it may be a provocative jest aimed at America's northern neighbor. However, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reportedly confirmed that Trump's annexation ambitions are indeed genuine.
In a confidential meeting with Canadian business and labor leaders, Trudeau is said to have acknowledged the reality of Trump's aspirations. "Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing. In my conversations with him on …" Trudeau's statement was abruptly cut off, as reported by CBC. The media had been requested to vacate the room prior to Trudeau's remarks, but both CBC and The Toronto Star managed to capture and record his comments.

Trudeau further suggested that the Trump administration's interest in Canada may be fueled by the country's wealth of critical minerals. "I suggest that not only does the Trump administration know how many critical minerals we have, but that may be even why they keep talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state," Trudeau elaborated, according to attendees who heard his comments. "They’re very aware of our resources, of what we have, and they very much want to be able to benefit from those."

"Tariffs are a tactic towards that end."

Trump initially proposed the idea during a dinner with Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago in late November, and has also suggested annexing Greenland. Canada, a founding NATO partner and home to over 40 million people, is a resource-rich nation that supplies the U.S. with commodities such as oil.
Trump has consistently criticized Canada and Mexico for their perceived failure to adequately curb the influx of illegal migrants and drugs, particularly fentanyl, into the U.S. He also asserts that the U.S. subsidizes Canada to the tune of $200 billion annually.

Last weekend, Trump reiterated his proposal to incorporate Canada, stating that the country would be exempt from his incoming tariffs if it were to join the U.S. "We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State," Trump added. "Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada – AND NO TARIFFS!"

However, following a call with Trudeau, Trump agreed to a 30-day pause on the tariffs. In return, Trudeau pledged to implement a $1.3 billion border plan and appoint a fentanyl czar. He also promised to bolster Canada's border with new helicopters, technology, personnel, and enhanced coordination with American authorities, with nearly 10,000 personnel assigned to border protection.

Canada is a significant supplier of crude oil to the U.S., accounting for approximately 60% of its imports.
