In a concerning development, Mexican drug cartels have reportedly instructed their operatives to target U.S. Border Patrol agents with kamikaze drones and other explosive devices.

This alarming directive comes amid the Trump administration's intensified efforts to secure the southern border. An internal memo, titled "Officer Safety Alert," has been circulated among federal agents, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance. The memo, which cites social media posts and other intelligence sources, urges agents to remain "cognizant of their surroundings" and to don ballistic armor while carrying long firearms.

As reported by Fox News, the memo, dated February 1, 2025, from the El Paso Sector Intelligence and Operations Center (EPT-IOC), reveals that Mexican cartel leaders have sanctioned the use of drones equipped with explosives against U.S. Border Patrol agents and military personnel stationed along the U.S.-Mexico border. The document advises all U.S. Border Patrol agents and Department of Defense personnel to report any drone sightings to their leadership and the EPT-IOC. This development underscores the escalating threat posed by cartels, who are increasingly resorting to sophisticated tactics to counter U.S. border enforcement measures.

The memo's emergence coincides with the Trump administration's aggressive deportation raids targeting illegal immigrants with criminal records and the implementation of stricter border security measures. These actions have evidently disrupted cartel operations, prompting a violent response. According to News Nation, which initially reported the memo, social media platforms like TikTok have been exploited by cartels to incite violence against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, with posts encouraging illegal immigrants to spit and urinate on agents and defecate in their vehicles. Additionally, there have been calls for assassins to target border personnel.

In a recent incident, Border Patrol agents came under fire from cartel members while patrolling in Fronton, Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the assailants, fleeing a military presence in Mexico, sought refuge on an island situated between the two countries. This incident further highlights the volatile situation at the border, where cartel activities pose a significant threat to U.S. law enforcement personnel.

Amid these challenges, U.S. Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, has proposed an unconventional solution to combat cartel operations. Lee suggested that Congress could authorize private security firms or specially trained civilians to intercept cartel activities, particularly those involving drug shipments or human trafficking. "Congress could issue letters of marque and reprisal authorizing private security firms or specially trained civilians to intercept cartel operations, particularly those involving drug shipments or human trafficking across borders," Lee wrote on X. He argued that this approach could reduce costs for American taxpayers, as privateers would be compensated with a share of the assets they seize, such as boats, vehicles, cash, gold, or equipment used in criminal activities.

The situation at the southern border remains tense, with cartels determined to protect their lucrative smuggling operations. As the U.S. government continues to fortify its border defenses, the threat of violence from these criminal organizations looms large, necessitating innovative strategies to safeguard national security and protect those tasked with enforcing the law.
