On Sunday, a large gathering of demonstrators, many holding Mexican flags, took over Los Angeles's Highway 101 in protest against President Donald Trump's immigration policies, as shown in footage shared by KTLA.

The California Highway Patrol was forced to close the freeway after protesters occupied both sides, preventing any vehicles from entering, KTLA reported.

In a statement on X, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) labeled the protests as “non-permitted” and indicated that they were causing significant traffic disruptions. The protests extended onto surrounding streets, contributing to major gridlock, according to the LAPD.

The demonstrations originated near a historic Mexican market in downtown Los Angeles, organized via social media, KTLA reported.

Protesters displayed signs with messages such as, “The real criminal is in the White House,” and “Jesus said ‘Love Thy Neighbor,’” as per KTLA.

While authorities rerouted traffic and closed affected highway sections, there was a notable absence of law enforcement presence, allowing protesters to block the freeway and encircle drivers, as reported by Fox News's Bill Melugin.

Upon taking office, President Trump enacted several executive orders related to immigration, which included empowering Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to expedite the deportation of illegal immigrants and rolling back numerous protections established during the Biden administration, such as the broad application of humanitarian parole.
