A national security watchdog group has taken legal action against the U.S. Army, demanding the release of records related to training materials that controversially labeled prominent pro-life organizations as "terrorist groups."

The Center to Advance Security in America (CASA) initiated this lawsuit on Friday to enforce a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. This request stems from revelations in July 2024 that Fort Liberty, a U.S. Army base, had utilized educational materials over a span of seven years, which were shown to more than 9,000 soldiers, categorizing certain pro-life groups in this manner.

As reported by the Daily Caller, CASA's lawsuit seeks to uncover the specific records and communications that led to the creation of these contentious PowerPoint slides. The pro-life movement has faced increased scrutiny and legal challenges during former President Joe Biden's administration, with the Department of Justice frequently prosecuting these groups under the FACE Act. This legislation aims to prevent "violent, threatening, damaging, and obstructive conduct intended to injure, intimidate, or interfere with the right to seek, obtain or provide reproductive health services."

James Fitzpatrick, Director of CASA, expressed his concerns to the Daily Caller News Foundation, stating, "Members of the Pro-Life movement being labeled as terrorists by the United States Army is outrageous and chills free speech among Americans dedicated to protecting the lives of the unborn." He emphasized the public's right to access the records and communications that contributed to the development of the training materials. CASA's FOIA request, initially submitted in July, sought communications involving Fort Liberty's public affairs personnel, meetings, calendar entries related to the slides, and interactions with media outlets. Despite the statutory requirement for a "timely disclosure," the Army has yet to comply, prompting CASA to file the lawsuit after 176 days of inaction.

The PowerPoint slides in question identified pro-life organizations such as National Right to Life, established by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Operation Rescue, a notable pro-life activist group, as "terrorist groups." In response to the incident, CASA lodged a complaint in September, arguing that the personnel responsible for the slides' creation and prolonged use violated military law and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The Army has since issued an apology for the slides and initiated an investigation into the matter. In a statement to the House Armed Services Committee, the Army clarified, "Pro-life groups are not considered terrorist groups under Army policy. The slides are not Army standard slides under the Army Extremist policy. The content in the picture and briefing are inconsistent with Army policies… The slides at issue will not be used again and will be replaced."

In a related development, former President Donald Trump pardoned 24 pro-life activists charged under the FACE Act during the first week of his administration. The Army has not yet responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation's request for comment on the ongoing situation.
