The fires, which began on January 7, have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 28 lives, obliterated over 10,000 homes, and left countless individuals homeless. Despite the fact that firefighters have managed to contain the majority of the flames, many are attributing the rapid spread of the fires to climate change. Rogan, however, insists that the city's perennially windy and arid conditions are the true culprits.
According to the Daily Mail, Rogan cited a fire that swept through LA County's Topanga Canyon in 1961, long before climate change was a recognized issue, as evidence that the city's conditions naturally create a 'fire season' each year. "This climate change narrative... LA has had essentially the same weather pattern since the 1800s... There was a huge fire that razed through the Hollywood Hills, pre climate change [in] 1961. LA has always been dry as f***. It's a desert," Rogan passionately argued during a discussion with Warren Smith, host of the Secret Scholar Society podcast.

Rogan went on to explain that the city's climate was a major draw for the film industry, as it allowed for outdoor filming without the worry of rain. He also pointed out that the city's winter winds, known as the Santa Ana winds, have always been a feature of the region. "There's fire season for a f****** reason. Los Angeles has fire season... every time the winter would come and everything was dry and all the vegetation was brown and the wind was whipping around, everybody would get nervous," Rogan stated.

However, the scientific community largely disagrees with Rogan's assertions. The World Weather Attribution, a consortium of researchers from the US, UK, and several European countries, has warned that the hot, dry, and windy conditions that fueled the fires were approximately 35 percent more likely due to global warming. Dr. Clair Barnes, a researcher at the Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College London, stated, "Climate change increased the risk of the devastating LA wildfires... Without a faster transition away from planet-heating fossil fuels, California will continue to get hotter, drier, and more flammable."

Experts have also warned that the risk of such fire conditions could increase by another 35 percent if global temperatures rise 2.6°C above pre-industrial levels, a scenario that the world is currently on track to reach by 2100. The LA fires were exacerbated by strong Santa Ana winds and drought conditions that have persisted since May 2024, leaving vegetation dry and highly flammable. Additionally, wet winters in the preceding two years led to an increase in vegetation growth, providing more fuel for the fires.

Researchers have utilized the 'fire weather index', which takes into account temperature, humidity, rainfall, and wind speed in the preceding weeks and days, to assess the conditions that make fires more likely. They have concluded that while coastal southern California is naturally susceptible to catastrophic wildfires, the extreme fire weather index condition that drove the LA fires is becoming increasingly likely due to climate change. Despite Rogan's assertions, it appears that the scientific consensus supports the view that climate change is a significant factor in the increasing severity and frequency of wildfires in Los Angeles.
