The Oklahoma Board of Education has taken a significant step by approving a proposal that mandates parents to verify their citizenship status when enrolling new students.

This decision was reached unanimously, with a 6-0 vote, following a brief 20-minute deliberation. Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters emphasized the intent behind this measure, stating, "Our rule around illegal immigration accounting is simply that. It is to account for how many students of illegal immigrants are in our schools."

As reported by Gateway Pundit, the proposal is not yet in effect, as it requires further approval from both the state legislature and the governor. Should it pass, the rule will also obligate school districts to report to the Oklahoma State Department of Education the number of students whose parents or legal guardians fail to establish citizenship or legal immigration status. This move has sparked opposition from the National Immigration Law Center, which argues that all children deserve access to taxpayer-funded education, irrespective of their citizenship. The organization stated, "All children have a constitutional right to equal access to education regardless of their citizenship or immigration status."

In a related development, Superintendent Walters recently initiated a $474 million lawsuit against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Deputy Director Peter Flores. Walters' office issued a press release asserting that the lawsuit seeks "compensation for the severe financial and operational strain that their failed border policies have placed on Oklahoma’s public schools." Walters criticized the current administration, saying, "Biden Administration leaders utterly abandoned their constitutional duty to secure our nation’s borders, leaving states like Oklahoma to pick up the pieces."

Walters further expressed his dissatisfaction with the federal government's handling of border security, stating, "While President Biden has neglected his responsibility to protect our borders for four years, hardworking Oklahomans are forced to cover the costs of his dereliction of duty." He emphasized the lawsuit's purpose, highlighting accountability and the need to ensure that Oklahoma's children receive a quality education, free from the repercussions of federal shortcomings. Walters concluded by reaffirming his commitment to advocating for the interests of Oklahoma students and taxpayers, promising, "I will always fight for Oklahoma students and Oklahoma taxpayers."
