Acosta took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce his new project, sharing a video with the message, “Hey guys! I’ve started something new. Go check it out!”
According to The New York Post, Acosta's new venture follows a path familiar to many journalists who have parted ways with mainstream media outlets in recent years: Substack. In his video, Acosta stated, “Hey guys, it’s Jim, and let me just say this: I’ve had quite the day.” He continued, “But as you can see, earlier today this was my last day at CNN and I did want to jump on Substack Live for a moment and say welcome to my new venture. I’m going independent, at least for now.” Acosta reiterated his parting remarks from CNN, where he likened Trump to “a tyrant,” urging viewers, “Don’t give in to the lies. Don’t give in to the fear. Hold on to the truth and hope. And we’ll keep this conversation going.”

Acosta, who served as CNN's White House correspondent and frequently clashed with Trump during his presidency, was reportedly facing a demotion to a less favorable time slot before opting to resign. Reflecting on his decision, Acosta explained, “You may have seen some reports about me and this show. And after giving all of this some careful consideration and weighing an alternative time slot CNN offered me, I have decided to move on.”

A significant moment in Acosta's career was his 2016 trip to Cuba with then-President Barack Obama, where he interviewed Raul Castro. Acosta, of Cuban descent, remarked, “As a son of a Cuban refugee, I took home this lesson. It is never a good time to bow down to a tyrant,” a statement seemingly directed at Trump.

In the wake of Acosta's departure, CNN plans to fill his morning slot with “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown,” as part of a broader strategy to revamp its struggling ratings under the leadership of CNN boss Mark Thompson. Thompson had reportedly offered Acosta a midnight-to-2 a.m. slot, with the possibility of hosting from the West Coast.
