President Donald Trump has taken a decisive step in bolstering national security by signing an executive order to create a U.S. missile defense system inspired by Israel's Iron Dome.

This initiative, deemed a top priority, aims to establish a "next-generation missile defense shield" to counteract sophisticated threats from nations such as Russia, China, and North Korea.

As reported by Straight Arrow News, the executive order, unveiled on Monday, January 27, instructs Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to present a comprehensive plan within 60 days. This plan is set to expedite the deployment of space-based missile tracking systems, develop interceptors capable of neutralizing missiles during their launch phases, and update threat assessments to safeguard critical U.S. locations.

Currently, the United States relies on missile defense systems like the Patriot, THAAD, and the Navy's Aegis system. However, experts have expressed doubts about the feasibility of adapting a system akin to Israel's Iron Dome to the vast geographic scale of the United States. Instead, Trump's vision advocates for a multi-layered strategy to intercept both short- and long-range missile threats at various stages of flight.

Trump has linked this initiative to former President Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, known as "Star Wars," which aimed to shield the U.S. from nuclear attacks during the Cold War. Although Reagan's vision was never fully realized, Trump asserts that advancements in technology now render this new effort achievable. He stressed that all components would be manufactured domestically.

The executive order aligns with broader military reform efforts spearheaded by Hegseth, including reevaluating global missile defense postures and enhancing allied cooperation. While the timelines and costs for the proposed system remain uncertain, the initiative underscores growing concerns over missile advancements by U.S. adversaries. The order lays out a roadmap for addressing evolving threats, including hypersonic missiles and potential rogue-state attacks, reinforcing Trump's commitment to "peace through strength."
