According to Fox News, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka vehemently criticized the operation, labeling it an "egregious act" and a breach of the Fourth Amendment. This came after ICE agents allegedly conducted a raid on a business establishment without presenting a warrant. Baraka expressed his indignation over the fact that one of the individuals detained was a U.S. military veteran whose military documentation was questioned.

In a statement, Baraka said, "This egregious act is in plain violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees ‘the right of the people be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures….’" He further pledged that Newark would not remain passive while its residents were being "unlawfully terrorized," asserting his readiness to "defend and protect civil and human rights."

The status of the U.S. citizen involved in the Newark incident remains unclear. An ICE spokesperson informed Fox News that the individual was requested to provide identification. The spokesperson stated, "U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement may encounter U.S. citizens while conducting field work and may request identification to establish an individual’s identity as was the case during a targeted enforcement operation at a worksite today in Newark, New Jersey." They added that the operation was part of an active investigation, and therefore, further details could not be disclosed as per ICE policy.

This incident comes amidst a nationwide increase in ICE operations as President Donald Trump intensifies efforts to curb illegal immigration, fulfilling a key campaign promise. Trump's "border czar" Tom Homan has indicated that ICE agents will prioritize the "worst first, public safety threats first, but no one is off the table. If they're in the country illegally, they got a problem."

New Jersey senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim echoed Baraka's condemnation of the raid. In a joint statement, they expressed their deep concern and demanded answers from the Department of Homeland Security. They argued that such actions instill fear in communities and called for solutions to the broken immigration system rather than fear tactics. They pledged to collaborate with Mayor Baraka and other local officials to gather more information and ensure the safety and rights of all New Jersey residents.
