In his first formal interview since resuming his role at the White House, President Donald Trump has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He expressed his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to launch a full-scale invasion in 2022 was a grave mistake. During a conversation with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump highlighted the devastating human toll of the war, estimating that approximately 850,000 Russian soldiers and 700,000 Ukrainian soldiers have perished since the conflict began.

As reported by Fox News, Trump criticized former President Joe Biden for his role in "allowing" the war to commence, suggesting that Biden's energy policies inadvertently enriched Putin. "Putin shouldn't have done it, too. I mean, I'm not blaming only what — Putin shouldn't have done it. He shouldn't have done it, and it has to stop," Trump stated. He further emphasized the urgency of ending the conflict, describing the battlefield as a site of mass slaughter and destruction, with cities reduced to "demolition sites."

In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump issued a stern warning to Putin, urging him to negotiate a settlement or face increased economic sanctions. "Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries," Trump wrote. This assertive stance underscores his commitment to leveraging economic pressure to bring about a resolution.

Trump also revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed a willingness to negotiate an end to the war. "He's had enough," Trump told Hannity. "He shouldn't have allowed this to happen either. You know, if he's no angel, he shouldn't have allowed this war to happen. First of all, he's fighting a much bigger entity, OK? Much bigger." Trump criticized Zelenskyy for engaging in a conflict with a significantly more powerful adversary, suggesting that a diplomatic solution could have been reached more easily.

In November, Reuters reported that Putin might be open to discussing a peace plan, potentially agreeing to freeze the conflict along the current lines. However, Moscow remains firm in its opposition to Ukraine joining NATO or allowing NATO troops on Ukrainian soil, according to five current and former Russian officials. This geopolitical tension adds complexity to the prospects of a peaceful resolution.

Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, expressed his desire for the war to conclude within 100 days of Trump's presidency. This ambitious timeline reflects the administration's determination to prioritize peace and stability in the region. As the conflict continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, hoping for a diplomatic breakthrough that could end the suffering and restore order.
