The Invictus Games, an international sporting event for wounded and disabled service members and veterans, has recently made a controversial decision.

The games, which were founded by Prince Harry, have decided to replace live ammunition with laser rifles for their shooting events. This decision, however, has been met with criticism and skepticism from some participants.

According to Gateway Pundit, the official social media account for the Invictus Games announced that the upcoming competition in Vancouver will utilize "infrared beam" rifles instead of traditional firearms. The account stated, “Compared to live ammunition and laser rifles, optic rifles are in a class of their own. They’re widely used for their enhanced safety, reliability and wide accessibility from novice to elite levels, including at the Paralympic Games and major international competitions.”

The Invictus Games further justified their decision by stating that these weapons can be used by "a broad range of people with disabilities," including those who are visually impaired. They also highlighted the environmental benefits of this change, stating that future users can experience the Biathlon event without the safety risks and environmental impact associated with live fire ammunition.

However, this decision has not been without its detractors. Christopher Bryde, a United States Army veteran who lost both of his legs in Afghanistan, expressed his concerns about the functionality of these laser rifles in cold weather conditions. Speaking to Fieldsports News, Bryde revealed that competitors “had a couple of issues with the cold” and that some of the laser rifles were “just not working.” He also noted that snow seemed to obstruct some of the targets, affecting the accuracy of the shots.

Despite these concerns, the Invictus Games remains committed to their decision. A spokesman for the Invictus Foundation told the U.K.’s Daily Mail that the primary reason for the lasers is inclusivity, as they “can be used by a wide range of those with disabilities.” The spokesman also assured that officials would be on site to ensure the readiness of the rifles, even in the face of potential blockage caused by snow.

This decision marks another step in Prince Harry's apparent shift towards more progressive values. The Duke of Sussex, who is an Afghanistan veteran and grew up hunting, has reportedly changed his stance on firearms since his marriage to American actress Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. His friend Dr Jane Goodall told the Daily Mail in 2020, “Meghan doesn’t like hunting, so I suspect that is over for him,” a prediction that has since proven accurate.

The implications of this shift are now being felt by his fellow veterans participating in the Invictus Games. While the decision to use laser rifles may be seen as a move towards inclusivity and environmental responsibility, it also raises questions about the practicality and reliability of these weapons in a competitive setting. As the games approach, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the competition and the participants' experiences.
