The escalating crisis of youth mental health in the United States has prompted Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to take decisive action.

On Friday, she announced her intention to empower parents with the legal right to sue Big Tech companies, in a bid to "hold bad actors accountable." This move is part of her broader strategy to tackle the detrimental effects of unrestricted access to smartphones and social media on America's youth.

According to Fox News, Sanders will be taking her campaign against Big Tech to an international stage next week. She is slated to address the issue at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, alongside Jonathan Haidt, author of "The Anxious Generation." Their discussion will focus on the harmful impact of smartphones and social media on young people. Sanders will also participate in a bipartisan session with Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear, discussing state priorities and the role of state governments during a presidential transition.

Sanders, whose administration prioritizes the protection of children, expressed her concern about the rising rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide among teenagers. "In the past decade, across America, anxiety, depression and suicide among teens have skyrocketed, and the culprit is clear: unrestricted access to phones and social media," she stated. She further emphasized her commitment to empowering parents and safeguarding children, declaring, "Under my leadership, Arkansas will act to empower parents and protect kids."

In her proactive approach to mitigating the harmful effects of Big Tech on youth mental health, Sanders has previously initiated a phone-free-school pilot program in 2024. This program provides state funding for schools to purchase phone pouches, thereby preventing phone use during school hours. She also plans to revise the state's Social Media Safety Act.

Sanders highlighted the need for innovative solutions to contemporary challenges, stating, "modern threats … require modern solutions." She underscored the urgency of this issue, particularly for young people, in her State of the State address. "In the past decade, across America, suicide rates among teens have tripled, self-harm among girls has risen by nearly 200%, and depression among teenagers has increased by 150%. The culprit is clear: unrestricted access to phones and social media."

The Governor shared the tragic story of a 16-year-old boy from Centerton, Arkansas, who took his own life after becoming increasingly engrossed in social media. His mother, who had attempted to limit his phone use, discovered after his death that his TikTok feed was filled with videos providing instructions for suicide. Sanders pledged, "We will give moms like [her] the right to sue Big Tech companies under state law, so that they can hold bad actors accountable."

Jonathan Haidt, who will be joining Sanders at Davos, recently expressed his shock at the stark contrast between previous generations and the current one, which is grappling with the pitfalls of social media. He noted the sudden decline in mental health among young people coinciding with the rise of social media, stating, "And then in 2012 and 2013: Boom. The graphs go way, way up. Mental health falls off a cliff. It’s incredibly sudden."

Governor Sanders' initiative to hold Big Tech accountable for its role in the youth mental health crisis is a significant step towards protecting America's youth. By empowering parents with the legal right to sue these companies, she aims to ensure that the digital giants take responsibility for their platforms' impact on young users.
