In the wake of a fifteen-month-long conflict in the Middle East, IDF Reserve Brig.

Gen. Amir Avivi has shed light on the shifting dynamics of the Israel-Hamas cease-fire agreement.

Avivi highlighted the significant changes that have influenced the agreement, which had been stagnant since May of the previous year due to Hamas's staunch opposition.

According to Fox News, Avivi explained, "This deal has been on the table since May last year and Hamas opposed it completely. Why? There was no real pressure on Hamas." He further elaborated on Israel's failed attempts to exert pressure on Hamas by withholding humanitarian aid, particularly gasoline. However, these efforts were thwarted by the administration, leaving Israel with limited leverage over Hamas.

Avivi pointed out two significant changes that have since altered the landscape. "One, Israel defeated Hezbollah and Hezbollah cannot support Hamas anymore. Also, Syria fell. Iran is weaker. But the big change is President Trump's threat," he stated. The threat Avivi refers to is President Trump's stern warning to Hamas that failure to release hostages would result in severe consequences.

Avivi further elaborated, "Once President Trump threatened them, that if they don't release hostages, there will be hell… I think they understand that if they don't get a deal now, the chances of getting a good deal for them will be very, very low, if at all. And therefore, they made their own assessment, and they are inclined to do the deal, thinking that they'll maximize what they can get now and not wait to see what 'hell' means."

The cease-fire agreement, which is due to take effect on January 19, has been attributed to the efforts of President-elect Donald Trump's incoming Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff. On January 7, Trump issued a stern warning to Hamas, stating that "all hell will break out" if the hostages were not returned by his inauguration.

Despite the progress made, Avivi remains skeptical about the longevity of the agreement. He warned of the possibility of Hamas resorting to "different tricks and try to trick Israel in one way or another." He concluded by emphasizing that this is "just the beginning" and that the situation will have to be closely monitored to see how it unfolds.
