According to Bloomberg, a memo circulated among Amazon employees in December revealed the company's plans to phase out "outdated programs and materials." The memo, penned by Amazon's senior human resources executive Candi Castleberry, indicated that the termination and consolidation of certain programs were expected to be finalized by the end of the month.

Castleberry, who previously held the title of vice president of global DEI, had her role rebranded in 2023 to vice president of Inclusive eXperiences and Technology. "Rather than have individual groups build programs, we are focusing on programs with proven outcomes — and we also aim to foster a more truly inclusive culture," she stated in the memo.

Bloomberg did not specify which programs were discontinued, but it was reported that they were DEI-related. A separate memo obtained by Fox Business suggested that Amazon executives had been assessing the effectiveness of these programs for several years. "We worked to unify employee groups together under one umbrella, and build programs that are open to all," the memo read.

In a recent development, Amazon has also removed webpages titled "Equity for Black people" and "LGBTQ+ rights" from the "Our Positions" section of its website. Amazon's decision mirrors similar actions taken by other major corporations. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and more, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, terminated all of its DEI programs this week. The company cited a shifting "legal and policy landscape" surrounding such initiatives as the reason for this decision.

Janelle Gale, vice president of human resources at Meta, explained in a memo to employees that recent Supreme Court decisions indicated a change in how courts would approach DEI. Gale added, "The term ‘DEI’ has also become charged, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others."
