In a recent development, Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Robert W. McElroy, a known critic of former President Donald Trump and a champion of progressive causes, as the new Roman Catholic Archbishop of Washington.

This move comes as a replacement for Cardinal Wilton Gregory, 77, who made history as the first African-American cardinal, a position that holds significant influence in the selection of the future Pope.

According to Gateway Pundit, Cardinal McElroy, currently serving as a bishop in San Diego, is recognized for his alignment with the Pope's liberal perspective. The New York Times describes him as a "longtime supporter of the pope’s pastoral agenda, and is known for regularly speaking out on the inclusion of migrants, women and L.G.B.T.Q. people in the Catholic church and in the United States.”

As the bishop of the San Diego diocese, located along the Mexico border, Cardinal McElroy has consistently stood with immigrants, a significant demographic for the Catholic church both globally and in the U.S. His stance on abortion has also been a point of divergence from other Catholic bishops who prioritize it as their primary issue. Cardinal McElroy has repeatedly argued that abortion is only one of several critical priorities of Catholic moral teaching.

In 2021, when conservative bishops proposed to deny communion to politicians supporting abortion rights, including President Biden, America’s second Catholic president, Cardinal McElroy opposed the move. He stated that such a proposal would turn the sacrament, “which seeks to make us one, will become for millions of Catholics a sign of division.”

Cardinal McElroy has been vocal about his opposition to Donald Trump's plan for mass deportations, describing it as "unthinkable." Last month, he released a statement pledging solidarity with those facing the threat of deportation, saying, "We commit to accompanying and walking in solidarity with you, our migrant brothers, sisters, and families through this uncertain time. We will shepherd you spiritually, gather information and resources, and continue to advocate for your dignity and family unity."

The New York Times suggests that this appointment serves as a rebuke to J.D. Vance, a 2018 convert to Catholicism who aligns himself with the traditionalist wing of the church. While Cardinal McElroy will not wield any political power, his leadership of an archdiocese of over 300,000 grants him substantial influence within the Catholic community.

Moreover, his role in the selection of the next Pope could potentially steer the church towards another leader in the vein of Pope Francis, further solidifying the liberal influence within the Catholic Church. This shift in leadership and the potential for continued liberal influence raises questions about the future direction of the Catholic Church and its engagement with contemporary social issues.
