In a recent television interview, Zelensky described President-elect Donald Trump as "strong and unpredictable," characteristics he believes could be instrumental in bringing an end to the hostilities.
According to The New York Post, Zelensky stated, "I believe [Trump] is strong and unpredictable. I would very much like President Trump’s unpredictability to be directed primarily toward the Russian Federation." He further added, "The ‘hot’ stage of the war can end quite quickly if Trump is strong in his position."

Trump, on his part, has assured that he will not forsake Ukraine in its nearly three-year-long struggle against Russia. He has even suggested that he could broker a peace deal before his inauguration on January 20, asserting that he has already made "progress" towards this goal. However, Zelensky has refuted Trump's claim of being able to end the war within 24 hours.

Last week, Russian officials rejected peace proposals purportedly put forth by Trump's team. These proposals included the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO and the deployment of peacekeepers to oversee the implementation of a ceasefire agreement. Trump's transition team has yet to respond to queries about his plans and stance on the conflict.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to exert control over approximately one-fifth of Ukraine, gradually expanding its influence in the eastern regions of the country since last year. Despite Ukraine's efforts to reclaim part of Russia’s Kursk region in August, experts argue that it has had little impact, with Ukraine subsequently losing around 40% of the reclaimed land. Zelensky continues to appeal for support from Western allies as Ukraine remains under-resourced on the front lines.

In the first three days of 2025, Russia reportedly launched over 300 drones and 20 missiles at Ukrainian cities and villages. Zelensky, in a message on Telegram, said, "Such Russian terror, which is not decreasing its intensity, requires us and all our partners to continue to build our air shield." He also indicated that upcoming meetings and negotiations will focus on bolstering Kyiv's defenses.
