Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, has declared an imminent "algorithm tweak" to counteract the "excessive negativity" that he perceives is being propagated on the platform.

Musk's announcement came via an X post on Friday, where he expressed his intention to "maximize unregretted user-seconds."

Musk acquired the platform, then known as Twitter, in October 2022. Following the acquisition, he reinstated several conservative figures who had been previously suspended, including President-elect Donald Trump. Trump's account had been removed following the Capitol Hill riot on January 6, 2021.

According to Newsweek, Musk was a significant supporter of Trump's successful 2024 presidential campaign. Following his election, Trump announced that Musk, along with business tycoon Vivek Ramaswamy, would co-head the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency.

In recent days, Musk has been involved in several contentious interventions on X. One such intervention involved urging King Charles III to dissolve the British Parliament and call for new elections in response to a sex trafficking scandal in the United Kingdom. The scandal involved predominantly white victims being targeted by men, primarily of Pakistani Muslim heritage, in towns across the country.

Musk stated on X, "Algorithm tweak coming soon to promote more informational/entertaining content. We will publish the changes to @XEng. Our goal is to maximize unregretted user-seconds. Too much negativity is being pushed that technically grows user time, but not unregretted user time." He further added, "We're also working on easy ways for you to adjust the content feed dynamically, so you can have what you want at any given moment."

The announcement by Musk elicited a variety of responses from other social media users. Ed Krassenstein, an artificial intelligence expert with a million followers on X, posted, "Elon Musk just announced that X will start penalizing negativity and propping up posts that are positive. This is definitely interesting timing, given the fact that X essentially rewarded negativity when Biden was president but is shifting to penalize negativity under Trump."

Another user, 'ThatUmbrellaGuy,' questioned the definition of 'negativity,' asking, "What's negativity? Criticism of the wrong person, persons, celebs, parties? The news (it's oftentimes not cheery)? Advocacy pointing out the ugly happening in our courts? Calling out broken systems? Companies?"

Matthew Camenzuli, an Australian activist and member of the country's center-right Liberal Party, expressed his concerns about Musk's call for less negativity on X, questioning whether it was about optimism and hope or an attempt to stifle debate.

London-based lawyer Tayah Ali offered a more critical perspective, stating, "It's clear that Elon Musk is far more calculating than most people realize. But he's also a bored billionaire who can afford to treat people's lives like pawns in a video game—and he's doing exactly that by treating people, nations, and ideals like meaningless pieces on a game board."

The potential impact of Musk's proposed algorithm change remains uncertain. However, it's worth noting that Musk has previously clashed with some Trump supporters, including former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, over his vocal support for H-1B skilled workers visas to the United States. Bannon labeled Musk a "toddler" after Musk told those opposing the visas to "F*** YOURSELF in the face."
