Mexican President Claudi Sheinbaum has expressed her readiness to welcome millions of illegal immigrants who may face deportation under the new administration.

In her daily press conference, Sheinbaum indicated that Mexico would be prepared to receive these individuals if the U.S. decided not to return them to their countries of origin.

According to Gateway Pundit, Sheinbaum stated, “We can collaborate through different mechanisms,” although she did not elaborate on what these mechanisms might be. She further added, “There will be time to speak with the United States government if these deportations really happen, but we will receive them here, we are going to receive them properly and we have a plan.”

Sheinbaum, who was recently elected to the presidency, has previously refrained from confirming whether Mexican authorities would cooperate with efforts to deport the millions of Mexicans and other foreign nationals residing in the U.S. illegally. This week, reports emerged that Sheinbaum's government is developing an application to alert illegal immigrants in the U.S. about potential deportations.

Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a press release, explained that the app would alert the “consulate closest to their location about situations of imminent detention, notify family members who have previously been selected, as well as report to the Foreign Affairs Secretary.” The release further stated, “The foreign affairs secretary was emphatic in pointing out that to deport someone from the United States you need a court order, a final sentence of deportation or removal, and that is where the consular team will be very aware that due process is complied with.”

Juan Ramon De la Fuente, Mexico’s secretary of foreign affairs, emphasized their commitment to defending the human rights of its citizens in accordance with international law. He explained the app's functionality, saying, “In case you find yourself in a situation where detention is imminent, you push the alert button and that sends a signal to the nearest consulate.” He reassured Mexican citizens in the U.S., stating, “We want to tell our fellow countrymen that they are not alone and they will not be alone.”

The reluctance of Mexico to assist the U.S. in deportation efforts can be attributed to the significant economic advantages brought by their migrants. In 2023, Mexican immigrants in the U.S. sent an impressive $63.3 billion back to their home country in remittances, marking a 7.6 percent increase from the previous year. This economic contribution underscores the complexity of the immigration issue and the delicate balance that must be struck between national security and economic considerations.
