In a recent opinion editorial for The Blaze, Buck Throckmorton questioned the common narrative that tariffs are a tax on consumers.

He argued that while tariffs could potentially increase consumer prices, they are not the only factor that erodes purchasing power. Throckmorton pointed out that inflation, driven by out-of-control government spending, also acts as an "effective tax" on consumers.

Throckmorton highlighted the tariffs proposed by Donald Trump against Canada and Mexico, which he argued serve a specific national security purpose. Trump's plan involves a 25% tariff on Mexican and Canadian imports until they take action to stop the flow of illegal aliens and drugs, particularly fentanyl, across the border. A 10% tariff on Chinese products was also proposed, without any incentives for China to resolve the issue.

Throckmorton criticized the assumption that the 25% tariff rate will remain in place, suggesting that this indicates a belief that neighboring countries will continue to allow drug and human trafficking to flow unabated. He noted that those who support both unreciprocated "free trade" and an uncontrolled border are likely the same individuals.

Throckmorton also criticized the U.S. government's spending on Ukraine's war effort, which he claimed has contributed to the federal deficit and the ongoing inflation crisis. He pointed out that grocery prices have increased by 22% since Joe Biden took office, a result of unchecked government spending.

In contrast, Throckmorton argued that the tariffs proposed by Trump against Canada and Mexico serve a specific national security purpose. He shared personal stories of friends who have lost children to fentanyl, a drug that often originates in China before crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. He argued that these deaths are a result of "asymmetrical warfare" waged against the U.S. by China and Mexico.

Throckmorton also criticized the U.S. defense budget, which he claimed does not protect the U.S. from the acts of war committed at the southern border by China and Mexico. He suggested that funding border security through tariffs could be an attractive option.

Throckmorton also addressed the media's focus on the potential impact of tariffs on avocado prices, referring to it as the "guacamole tax." He argued that this so-called tax would disappear if Mexico halted the flow of drugs and human traffickers across its northern border.

Throckmorton concluded by criticizing government waste, citing an example of a $330,000 appropriation for "technical assistance for gender empowerment training" in Mexico City. He argued that such spending contributes to rising inflation for U.S. consumers and suggested that he would be willing to pay more for tariffs on Mexican products if it meant stopping the global crime network passing through Mexico and ending its border war against the U.S.
