President-elect Donald J. Trump has selected Daniel P. Driscoll, a former Army officer and investment banker from North Carolina, as the 27th Secretary of the Army. Driscoll, who once ran for the GOP primary in North Carolina's 11th District, is a combat veteran who served in Iraq and a graduate of the U.S. Army's Ranger School.

According to RedState, Driscoll's appointment comes as part of Trump's broader strategy to shift the Pentagon's focus away from high-cost items and the problematic trend of military leaders transitioning to major defense contractors shortly after retirement. As Secretary of the Army, Driscoll will oversee more than a million active duty, reserve, and National Guard soldiers, as well as 330,000 civilian employees.

Driscoll's tenure will be marked by significant challenges. The Army is currently grappling with issues reminiscent of the late 1970s, including low morale, inadequate training, and a lack of unity. The general officer corps appears to be beyond repair, and there are concerns that the Army's procurement officials are set to embark on another spree of replacing successful and still top-tier equipment at a high cost, a move that will likely be funded by reducing Army end-strength.

However, Driscoll's experience on the front lines should provide him with a deep understanding of the issues facing the Army. His entrepreneurial background could also prove beneficial in preventing him from being swayed by the organization's internal politics.

As Driscoll prepares to take on this critical role, he will undoubtedly need all the support he can get. His mission to restore the Army's strength and morale while maintaining fiscal responsibility will be a daunting task. But with his military and business experience, he is well-equipped to face these challenges head-on.
