In an opinion editorial by Teri Christoph for RedState, the author criticizes the Democratic Party for their alleged lack of understanding and empathy towards the economic struggles faced by everyday Americans.

Christoph argues that Democrats' dismissive attitude towards these struggles was a significant factor in their recent electoral losses.

The author refers to a tweet from the official account of the Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee, which is led by Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA). The tweet was in response to a USA Today article reporting that Americans spent a record $10.8 billion online on Black Friday. The Democrats' tweet, according to Christoph, mocked Americans who are struggling financially under the Biden administration.

The USA Today article also highlighted the increasing popularity of the buy now, pay later (BNPL) option, with BNPL sales accounting for $686.3 million in online sales. The firm estimates that consumers are expected to make $864.1 million in online BNPL purchases this weekend. Christoph describes the BNPL option as a modern-day layaway program, which allows budget-conscious consumers to purchase items in installments or in a lump sum once they have the funds.

The author criticizes journalist Paul Brandus, known as "West Wing Report" on social media, for posting a screenshot of the USA Today article and adding a comment that she interprets as a swipe at those complaining about high prices. Christoph argues that it's not "whining" to express economic struggles and to ask the government for common-sense solutions to ease the burden.

The Democrats' tweet, which was later deleted, was seen by Christoph as a further insult to struggling Americans. The author argues that the Democrats' dismissive attitude towards these struggles is indicative of their lack of understanding of basic economics and the concept of Black Friday, which she describes as a time for consumers to take advantage of limited-time bargains.

Christoph concludes her piece by referring to the Oxford University Press's choice of "brain rot" as its word of the year, which she suggests aptly describes the Democrats' current state. She accuses the party of implementing disastrous economic policies, blaming others for their failures, and failing to learn from their mistakes.
