President-elect Donald Trump is said to be considering Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a potential nominee for the position of Defense Secretary.

This comes amidst increasing skepticism about the likelihood of his current nominee, Pete Hegseth, securing Senate confirmation due to allegations of sexual assault and public intoxication.

The Wall Street Journal first reported this development, citing sources familiar with the discussions. According to these sources, Trump's allies are concerned that Hegseth's nomination may not withstand further scrutiny. DeSantis, a former Navy lawyer who shares Hegseth's anti-"woke" stance, is seen as a suitable replacement. His national prominence within the GOP could also be a significant factor in his favor.

Politico confirmed the Journal's report, suggesting that a cabinet role could enhance DeSantis' political prospects, especially since term limits prevent him from seeking re-election as Florida Governor in 2026. This potential nomination marks a significant shift in DeSantis' relationship with Trump, who previously mocked and belittled the Florida Governor during the GOP primary.

In addition to DeSantis, Senators Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) have been named as potential replacements for Hegseth, as reported by CNN.

The controversy surrounding Hegseth's nomination stems from allegations of sexual assault dating back to 2017. The Wall Street Journal reported that up to six Republican senators have privately expressed opposition to his nomination. Hegseth, a former Fox News host and combat veteran, will have the opportunity to address these allegations in a Fox News interview and during meetings with several lawmakers, including Senator Ernst.

Further complicating Hegseth's situation are allegations of repeated public drunkenness. The New Yorker reported that Hegseth was compelled to resign as the head of two nonprofit veterans groups following accusations of inappropriate behavior, including an incident at a Louisiana strip club and another at a hotel bar in Ohio.

Despite these challenges, Hegseth continues to deny the allegations against him, asserting that the sexual encounter in question was consensual. His lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, stated that Hegseth had paid a settlement to the accuser in 2020 as part of a nondisclosure agreement. Hegseth's mother, Penelope, has also been quoted expressing concern over her son's behavior, urging him to seek help.
