In a candid conversation with Jane Fonda on his podcast, Maher confessed, “I’m shitting my pants. I mean, I may quit because I don’t want to do another. I did all the Trump stuff before anybody. I said he was a con man before anyone else; I called him a mafia boss.”
According to Mediaite, Maher voiced his concerns about Trump's alleged hostility towards him and the potential of becoming a target of the president on social media once more. The comedian expressed his fatigue with the situation, stating, “I’m bored with it.” Fonda suggested Maher find a new focus for his show, to which he responded, “The show is the politics, there’s no other thing, and he’s going to dominate the news like he always does.”

Earlier this year, Maher hinted at the possibility of ending his standup career as well. He said, “I could go back. I don’t want to make a big announcement or something. I’m doing a special at the end of the year. It’ll be my 13th for HBO. That’s a lot.”

The conversation between Maher and Fonda wasn't without tension. They had a heated exchange over the political climate in California, with Maher criticizing the state for being "extreme leftist" and over-regulated. He questioned, “You’ve never heard that California is over-taxed and over-regulated? That we are a one-party state where there’s no checks on extreme leftism?” Fonda, however, dismissed his claims, stating, “I don’t for a minute consider California a state that is extreme leftist. Not at all. Not in any way.”
