In a nail-biting turn of events, Democratic contender Derek Tran has successfully ousted Republican incumbent Rep. Michelle Steel from her seat in California's 45th congressional district.

This victory, secured by a margin of less than 600 votes, has further diminished the already precarious House majority held by the GOP. The current tally stands at 220 seats for the Republicans and 214 for the Democrats.

According to The Blaze, the 45th congressional district of California was among the 19 House districts that saw President Joe Biden emerge victorious in 2020, but had a Republican incumbent in 2024. This district has been a battleground for both parties, with its political leanings oscillating between the two.

Steel, in a heartfelt message on Thursday, reflected on her journey as an immigrant who was warmly embraced by the United States. "From the moment I came to the United States, I knew that giving back to the country that welcomed me with open arms would be part of my future," she said. She expressed gratitude for the opportunities she received in the country, which allowed her to pursue higher education, start a family, and realize her own American Dream.

Steel's political journey was marked by her commitment to assist first-generation Americans, confront adversaries, and uphold human rights. "The journey to work on behalf of legal immigrants and struggling families took me somewhere I never could have imagined — and for which I will always be grateful — the United States Congress," she continued. Steel, who first entered Congress in 2022 following a redistricting in California, replaced Democratic Rep. Katie Porter. Prior to this, she served a term in California's 48th congressional district in 2020. Despite her defeat, Steel vowed to continue her fight, stating, "I will never stop fighting for you."

Tran, on the other hand, expressed his gratitude to Steel for her service after she conceded the race. "Just a short while ago, Congresswoman Michelle Steel called me to concede, and I expressed my appreciation to her for her service," Tran said. He expressed his eagerness to work closely with Steel's office to ensure a seamless transition and to hit the ground running in early January. "I look forward to once again taking the oath to support and defend our Constitution and beginning this next chapter of public service so we can put people first," Tran added. This change in guard marks a new chapter in the political landscape of California's 45th congressional district.
