This surge is particularly noteworthy given that overall print book sales have only seen a marginal increase of less than 1 percent during the same timeframe.
As reported by The Post Millennial, this information comes from a Wall Street Journal report, which cites data from Circana BookScan. Industry insiders and experts suggest that the spike in Bible sales is a response to societal anxieties and a collective search for hope. Jeff Crosby, president of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, shared his perspective with the Wall Street Journal, stating, “People are experiencing anxiety themselves, or they’re worried for their children and grandchildren. It’s related to artificial intelligence, election cycles… and all of that feeds a desire for assurance that we’re going to be OK.”
Bethany Martin, who manages the Faith & Life Bookstore in Newton, Kansas, has observed a similar trend. She noted a significant number of her customers are first-time Bible buyers. “They’re looking for hope with the world the way it is, and the Bible is what they’re reaching for,” Martin said. Her store alone offers over 270 versions of the Bible, catering to various preferences in size and price.
Interestingly, this surge in Bible sales is occurring against a backdrop of increasing secularism in the US. A study by the Pew Research Center found that approximately 28 percent of US adults now identify as religiously unaffiliated. Yet, despite this trend, Bible sales reached 14.2 million copies in 2023, a substantial increase from 9.7 million in 2019. By October of this year, 13.7 million copies had already been sold.

The demand is not limited to Bibles alone. There is a growing interest in related literature that offers context and guidance for scripture study. Note-taking print editions, audiobooks, and even mainstream retailers like Amazon are reporting strong Bible sales. This trend is partly driven by influencers, podcasters, and TikTok creators who share Bible stories and study tips with their audiences.

Mark Bertrand, founder of Lectio.org, a website focused on Bible design, suggests that marketing efforts may also be contributing to the trend. “I’d like to say there is a craving for knowledge of scripture, but a lot of smart people are thinking about Bible marketing and catering to every whim for Bible study,” Bertrand said. This surge in Bible sales, therefore, may be a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional values and the search for hope in times of uncertainty.
