This comes in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's announcement of his intention to replace the current FBI Director, Christopher Wray, with Kash Patel.
According to the Daily Caller, Trump's decision to appoint Patel was made public on Saturday. The President-elect expressed his belief that Patel would be instrumental in curbing the escalating crime wave in America, dismantling migrant criminal gangs, and halting the heinous tide of human and drug trafficking across the border. Raskin's views on this development were sought during the "State of the Union" program, hosted by Kasie Hunt.
Raskin noted, "Well, Christopher Wray, of course, is a Republican, appointed by a Republican, as he has said. But apparently he has demonstrated too much independence and objectivity in the job for Donald Trump, who wants much more of a personal loyalist in the position, and that’s why he’s gone to Kash Patel."

The conversation took a turn when Hunt questioned Raskin about potential issues within the FBI under its current leadership. Raskin acknowledged historical instances of the FBI being used as a political tool but denied the existence of current evidence supporting the notion of one party being targeted.

Raskin stated, "If you look at it historically, for example, during the Cohen-Telpro period, the FBI really was weaponized against Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement and the Peace Movement. There was decades of the FBI being basically used as a political instrument." He further added, "I haven’t seen what the proof is that the FBI has been weaponized against a political party — or the Department of Justice."

Raskin also pointed out that the Department of Justice has brought charges against Democratic politicians, challenging the idea that law enforcement should only target one political direction. He argued that such a belief could be what critics refer to when they discuss politicization in the deep state.

The Maryland Representative said, "I mean, the deep state, nobody’s ever defined it. Apparently, it just means anybody who doesn’t do the will of Donald Trump."
Public sentiment towards the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) has been waning, with Wray facing mounting criticism following the first assassination attempt on Trump during a Pennsylvania rally on July 13. Wray's comments during a House Judiciary Committee hearing post the attack have been a source of controversy. He stated, "With respect to former President Trump, there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that, you know, hit his ear."

Republicans, including Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, have long accused Wray of harboring a political bias, particularly in investigations like that of Hunter Biden. Grassley demanded information from Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland in a July 2022 letter, following allegations from two Internal Revenue Service whistleblowers that the DOJ had been dragging its feet on criminal investigations into Hunter’s alleged unpaid taxes from 2017 and 2018.
