However, his profound bond with North Dakota, a state that played a pivotal role in molding his adventurous spirit and deep appreciation for nature, is less known.
According to Fox News, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation is set to honor this connection by establishing an expansive, cutting-edge presidential library on over 90 acres in the North Dakota Badlands. This initiative, taking place more than a century after Roosevelt's passing, aims to celebrate the symbiotic relationship between the former president and the land that shaped him.
The project is rooted in Roosevelt's three core values: citizenship, leadership, and conservation. The library, situated on the outskirts of Medora, North Dakota, will offer a panoramic view of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the only national park named after an individual.

Edward O’Keefe, CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation, announced the project, stating, "TR famously balked at the critic, and encouraged everyone to ‘get in the arena’ of life." O’Keefe, a native of North Dakota, elaborated that the library's vision is to function as a center for civic engagement, learning, and research. The library will feature a large auditorium, envisioned by the foundation as a potential venue for future presidential debates.

O’Keefe emphasized the library's mission to connect individuals with what Roosevelt referred to as the "strenuous life" of the North Dakota wilderness. He quoted Roosevelt, saying, "[Roosevelt] wrote that if all his memories were to be taken from him, and he was forced only one memory from his incredible life he would choose to remember ‘my life on the ranch with its experiences close to nature and among the men who lived nearest her.’"

Roosevelt, who served two transformative presidential terms from 1901 to 1909, relocated to the North Dakota Badlands in 1884, following the tragic deaths of his wife and mother on the same day. It was in the solitude and beauty of the North Dakota wilderness that Roosevelt found solace. He later stated that his presidency would not have been possible without his experiences in North Dakota.

He expressed his hope for every visitor to the library to understand the role of nature as a restorative force in Roosevelt's life and to realize their potential to effect change in the world.

The library's design reflects Roosevelt's lifestyle, with the building designed to live off the land. The foundation is employing local contractors and using materials that minimize waste, emissions, water, and energy usage. The library's design team from the U.S.-Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta envisioned a building that naturally blends with the landscape, with an earthen roof that curves with the nearby butte.

Roosevelt V also highlighted that all Americans can draw inspiration from his great-great-grandfather's enduring legacy. He emphasized the relevance of Roosevelt's legacy of citizenship, leadership, and conservation in today's world. He concluded, "Like Theodore Roosevelt, a man of paradoxes – Republican and progressive, crusader against monopolies and capitalist, hunter and conservationist, partisan and rogue independent – our country is many different things. Finding the commonality among them may just be the key to America’s future."
