In a recent article by New York Times reporter Sharon LaFraniere, she scrutinized President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Pentagon Chief, Pete Hegseth, using a private email his mother sent him in a moment of anger.

The email, which the mother later regretted and apologized for, was used as the basis for the piece.

According to Breitbart, the article included a quote from Hegseth's mother, who expressed regret for her hasty email, stating it was sent "in anger, with emotion." She defended her son, refuting the contents of her email, and stated, "It is not true. It has never been true. I know my son. He is a good father, husband." She also expressed her disgust at the Times' decision to publish the contents of the private email.

Despite the mother's remorse and the refusal of several other outlets to run the story, LaFraniere chose to publish it. She even promoted the piece on her social media account, referring to it as a "gift" and highlighting that it was not behind a paywall.

LaFraniere, who boasts of being part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team for reporting on the Russia collusion hoax, prides herself on getting the story right. She claims to be committed to treating people fairly and ensuring that her stories are balanced and accurate.

The contentious email was sent by Hegseth's mother on April 30, 2018, during Hegseth's divorce proceedings from his then-wife, Samantha. In the email, she criticized him for his treatment of Samantha and other women, writing, "Sam is a good mother and a good person (under the circumstances that you created) and I know deep down you know that. For you to try to label her as 'unstable' for your own advantage is despicable and abusive. Is there any sense of decency left in you? She did not ask for or deserve any of what has come to her by your hand. Neither did Meredith."

Hegseth, a Princeton University graduate, married his first wife, Meredith, shortly after graduation in 2004. After serving in Iraq in 2005, they divorced in 2009. He married Samantha in 2010, and after serving in Afghanistan and having three children, they divorced in 2017. Hegseth later married Fox News executive producer Jennifer Hegseth in 2019.

The publication of the private email sparked outrage among some, including author and combat veteran Sean Parnell, who lambasted LaFraniere for her decision. He called the publication of the email "despicably low" and "sickening," adding that it was "irresponsible as hell" to make such private family issues public. Parnell also criticized LaFraniere for promoting the story as a "gift" that was not behind a paywall.

Megyn Kelly, a podcast host and former Fox News anchor, also criticized the Times for publishing the email. She sarcastically suggested that the next story might be about Hegseth being late in sending his thank you cards after Christmas six years ago.

The publication of the private email appears to be part of a larger smear campaign against Hegseth, a Washington-outsider, in an effort to undermine his nomination. Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported that a woman accused Hegseth of rape in 2017, citing a police report. However, the police report showed inconsistencies in the woman's account and stated there was no evidence of rape. No charges were ever filed.

Furthermore, Reuters reported that Hegseth was alleged to have tattoos associated with white supremacy. However, Breitbart News discovered that two far-left veterans, including one involved in Democrat politics and a supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris, were behind the unfounded claim. The use of private family disputes and unproven allegations in an attempt to discredit Hegseth raises questions about the fairness and accuracy of such reporting.
