Dr. Anthony Fauci, a prominent figure in the United States' response to the COVID-19 pandemic, is currently under fire on various social media platforms.

The criticism stems from a recent manuscript he co-authored, published in the esteemed Clinical Infectious Diseases journal. In the paper, Fauci upholds his belief that the virus originated naturally, and controversially cites a discredited assertion that President-elect Trump advised Americans to inject bleach as a countermeasure against the virus.

According to Fox News, the paper, titled "HIV/AIDS and COVID-19: Shared Lessons from Two Pandemics," was co-authored with researcher Gregory Folkers. The manuscript has sparked a wave of criticism, particularly from conservative quarters, due to its critique of Trump's pandemic management and its reference to the bleach injection claim.

In the paper, Fauci and Folkers wrote, "With COVID-19, the role of political leadership at the highest level -- or the lack thereof -- was again shown to be critical." They further criticized Trump's approach, stating, "As COVID-19 exploded globally and in the United States, President Donald Trump frequently minimized the seriousness of the pandemic, repeatedly claiming that COVID-19 would just ‘go away’ In the first full year of the pandemic (2020, the last year of his presidency) he failed to use his bully pulpit to encourage people to use available ‘low-tech’ tools such as masks/respirators, better ventilation, and physical distancing to reduce the risk of infection."

The authors also accused Trump of endorsing "unproven and potentially dangerous substances for COVID-19 prevention and treatment such as bleach injections, the antimalarial hydroxychloroquine and the anti-parasitic drug ivermectin." They argued that many of his communications during the pandemic were missed opportunities for political leadership in promoting policies and practices to mitigate the impact of the pandemic.

The paper further posits that "abundant evidence from top evolutionary virologists and leading scientists in other fields strongly suggests that the virus jumped species from an animal reservoir to humans in the Huanan market in Wuhan, China, and then spread throughout China and the rest of the world."

However, several media outlets, including Politifact, have refuted the claim that Trump suggested people inject themselves with bleach, labeling President Biden’s accusation as "mostly false."

The backlash against Fauci's paper has been swift and severe. Conservative communicator Steve Guest labeled Fauci as an "embarrassment," while National Review contributor Pradeep Shanker expressed his dismay with a succinct "Oy vey." Author and journalist Jerry Dunleavy criticized Fauci for his claims about Trump and the virus's origin, stating that the Wuhan lab leak theory was not even mentioned.
