The American Principles Project (APP), a conservative think tank, has released data indicating that these schools, which account for less than 10 percent of American students, have been the focus of nearly 70 percent of the Department of Education's enforcement actions.
According to Fox News, Jon Schweppe, APP Policy Director, has voiced strong criticism of the Democrats, accusing them of "weaponizing every part of the federal government to target their opponents" over the past four years. Schweppe emphasized that while the Department of Justice has been in the spotlight for its actions, the Department of Education's efforts should not be overlooked. "As our report details, the Biden-Harris Department of Education has been engaged in a long-running scheme to punish Christian colleges that are ideologically opposed to the left’s agenda. The unfair targeting of these institutions has been egregious, and it needs to stop immediately," Schweppe stated.

The APP report highlights the scrutiny faced by two of America's leading Christian universities, Grand Canyon University (GCU) and Liberty University, by the Department of Education. Both institutions have been hit with record-level fines that surpass "all penalties imposed over the past seven years combined," including those levied against Penn State and Michigan State for the sexual crimes of Jerry Sandusky and Larry Nassar.

GCU is currently appealing a $37.7 million fine imposed by the Department of Education in November last year. The fine was levied on the basis of allegations that the Arizona-based university misled students about the cost of its doctoral programs over several years. In addition, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona has threatened to shut down GCU, labeling it a "predatory school" that preys on first-generation students.

The APP report also reveals that "at least 12 Christian colleges have been the target of excessive penalties or banned from receiving federal student aid; by comparison, no Ivy League school has been the recipient of punitive action by the Office of Enforcement." It further states that "the average fine against a Christian school for a Clery Act violation was $815,000, compared to $228,571 against public and private institutions."

This report comes in the wake of a legal victory for GCU over the Department of Education regarding the university's non-profit status. Despite approval from the Arizona Board for Private Postsecondary Education, the Internal Revenue Service, the State of Arizona, and the Higher Learning Commission, the Department of Education denied GCU's nonprofit recognition. However, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that the Department of Education had unlawfully applied an incorrect standard in determining the university's nonprofit status.

In response to the report, a Department of Education spokesperson told Fox News Digital that a "school’s religious affiliation or non-profit status has absolutely no bearing on our oversight and enforcement actions." They further claimed that the APP report was pushing a "false narrative by distorting information released publicly by the Department."
Despite these assertions, the data presented by the APP report raises serious questions about the Department of Education's enforcement practices and their impact on faith-based and career schools.
