This year, the aftermath of the 2024 elections has brought about some intriguing results, with voters seemingly prioritizing the reduction of their Thanksgiving meal expenses over fostering harmonious family conversations.

This might seem like an oversimplification, but the numbers tell a compelling story. It appears that the cost of living has taken precedence over the pursuit of civility in political discourse.

As a bipartisan pair, one Republican and one Democrat, we have spent decades conducting polls on the state of civility in political discourse. Over the past five years, we have collaborated with the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service to delve deeper into this issue. Following the 2024 elections, we conducted a poll involving 800 likely voters, asking them a range of questions about the candidates and their campaigns.

According to The Blaze, our findings revealed that many voters perceived Vice President Harris as a unifying figure who ran a less negative campaign compared to President Trump. However, Trump had the upper hand in crucial areas that ultimately led to his victory. He successfully positioned himself as the candidate who could address the pressing issues that voters care about the most. Exit polls consistently showed that the economy was the top concern for voters on Election Day, a pattern that aligns with Trump's win.

When asked, "Which candidate is addressing this issue?" we observed some interesting dynamics. Vice President Harris outperformed President Trump in areas such as abortion, protecting democracy, sharing values, and caring about people. Fifty-two percent of voters believed that Harris was the candidate who could better unite the country.

On the other hand, voters felt that President Trump addressed the economy, inflation, and immigration more effectively. A majority believed he would be more capable of getting things done, although they did not expect him to be a unifying figure in the White House.

The results indicate that voters prioritized economic concerns over civility. Interestingly, the overall outcome has led to a decrease in political tensions, as measured by our five-year standard. This drop is largely attributed to Republicans who felt a sense of relief after Election Day.

We gauge tension by asking respondents to rate the country's division on a scale of one to 100, with one indicating no division and 100 indicating a civil war. Since our last poll in March, we observed a four-point drop from 70 to 66, the lowest score in the five years we have conducted this poll. Democrats rated the division highest at 70, while independents were around the average (66), and Republicans perceived the least division (61). These scores represent a significant 14-point drop for Republicans since March, with independents remaining largely unchanged and Democrats experiencing a slight two-point increase.

Notably, respondents expressed optimism about the future and the potential for bipartisan collaboration. Despite President Trump's "trifecta" control, 95% of those polled agreed with the statement, "I want President Trump, Republicans in Congress, and Democrats in Congress to work together to solve the major problems facing this country." Furthermore, 82% agreed that it would be beneficial for the country if President Trump and Congress compromised to find solutions, even if it meant not always getting what they wanted.

Reflecting these hopes, respondents predicted a division score of 61 out of 100 for the coming year, a decrease of over 12 points led primarily by Republicans from September 2023.

So, what does this mean for your Thanksgiving meal this year? Prices are expected to decrease significantly, dropping nearly $10 from last year's average cost of $67.84 to $58.08. Your Republican relative might attribute this to the market's reaction to President Trump's win, while your Democrat relative might argue that it's proof that Bidenomics is working and the country made a mistake on Election Day.

Regardless of the perspective, it's clear that politics will be a hot topic at many Thanksgiving tables across the nation. The hope is that these discussions will be conducted with a touch more civility this time around.
