Matthew Barton, the District Attorney of DeSoto County, unveiled "Operation Final Departure" on Friday. This operation aims to deport illegal immigrants currently detained in the county jail, as reported by Action News 5.
According to The Post Millennial, Barton expressed his concerns about the financial burden of illegal immigration on Mississippi taxpayers. "The cost of illegal immigration should not be shouldered by Mississippi taxpayers. The federal government has neglected its duty to enforce immigration laws, so it’s time for local officials to step up," Barton stated. He further emphasized his readiness to collaborate with the Trump administration upon its return to the White House, vowing to ensure that illegal immigrants who commit crimes in Mississippi are promptly deported.
The district attorney's office will collaborate with federal agencies and Tom Homan, the newly appointed border czar for the Trump administration, to devise a strategy to address "the issue of criminal activity among illegal immigrants in DeSoto County." A formal plan will be submitted to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by January 15, 2025. Barton assured that the plan would align with the Trump administration's priorities, facilitating a smooth transition to more robust enforcement of immigration laws under President Trump's leadership.

Barton expressed his concern about the presence of Venezuelan gangs and other potential threats in the Mid-South. "That is why I am committed to working alongside federal agencies, President Trump’s administration, and the military to ensure a tough, no-excuses approach to criminal activity by individuals unlawfully present in the United States," he stated.

The announcement on Friday revealed that 16 illegal immigrants were being held in DeSoto County Jail. However, Barton later corrected this figure, stating that there were actually 17 detainees as of Friday. Tish Clark, the Public Information Officer for the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that 13 individuals were being held, all under an ICE hold. This discrepancy in numbers underscores the complexity of the issue and the ongoing efforts to address it.
