In a recent development, Tom Homan, the individual chosen by President-elect Trump to oversee border control, has expressed his readiness to incarcerate Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (D), a Democrat, over his pledge to safeguard migrants in Denver.

This comes in the wake of Trump's promise to ramp up deportations, especially in sanctuary cities, upon his return to the Oval Office.

According to The Hill, Homan, who previously held the position of director at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), criticized Johnston's stance during a conversation with Fox News's Sean Hannity. "All he has to do is look at Arizona v. U.S. and he would see he’s breaking the law," Homan stated. He further added, "But, look, me and the Denver mayor, we agree on one thing. He’s willing to go to jail, I’m willing to put him in jail."

Mayor Johnston had previously indicated in a discussion with Denverite that he would employ the city's police force to obstruct federal forces from deporting migrants. However, in a subsequent interview with 9News, he retracted those comments but maintained his belief that local residents would assist in preventing the planned deportations.

When questioned about whether sanctuary cities are violating the law by restricting or preventing their local authorities from cooperating with the federal government in enforcing immigration laws, Homan responded affirmatively. He went on to detail the Trump administration's strategy to address this issue. "We are going to go do the job, President Trump has a mandate for the American people. We’ve got to secure this country, and we have to save American lives," Homan declared to Hannity.

Homan further emphasized the administration's focus on public safety and national security threats. "President Trump has been clear, we want to concentrate on public safety threats and national security threats," he said. "And I find it shocking that any mayor of the city would say they don’t want public safety threats removed from their neighborhoods."

These comments follow Homan's previous threats to withdraw funding from states that refuse to cooperate with the federal government's deportation plans. Karoline Leavitt, spokesperson for the Trump transition team and incoming press secretary, has also stated that the president-elect "will marshal every federal and state power necessary to institute the largest deportation operation of illegal criminals, drug dealers, and human traffickers in American history while simultaneously lowering costs for families."

The president-elect has even hinted at the possibility of utilizing military assets to fulfill his deportation pledge. As of now, Mayor Johnston's office has not responded to these developments.
