Robin Marshall, a former member of the Science of Identity Foundation (SIF), has shared her experiences within the organization, which she and others have described as a "cult."

Marshall joined the group at the age of 19, drawn in by the allure of a familial environment and the promise of spiritual growth through meditation and chanting. However, her experiences within the group soon took a darker turn.

According to Newsweek, Marshall's initial attraction to the group was due to its offer of "wwoofing," a term used to describe working on a farm for a few hours each day in exchange for accommodation. However, once she arrived in Hawaii, where the group was based, she began to notice unsettling patterns of behavior. "I heard everybody there at some point get called worthless," Marshall revealed.

The SIF, which was founded in the 1970s by Chris Butler, is not your typical farming community organization. Members like Marshall were expected to work for about four hours a day, but their duties also included listening to audio lectures from Butler, whom they referred to as their "guru." These lectures, according to Marshall, were filled with Butler's rants and random lessons, often recorded while he interacted with people in the room.

One figure within the group that Marshall highlighted was former Representative Tulsi Gabbard. "Tulsi was being groomed for a political position because Chris Butler had political aspirations," Marshall stated. "He wanted the influence. It was very unusual because women in Science of Identity aren't really encouraged to do anything."

Gabbard, a Democrat-turned-Republican, has recently been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the director of national intelligence. This position oversees 18 intelligence agencies, including the CIA and NSA. Gabbard, a military veteran and former congresswoman, ran for president in the Democratic primary in 2020. She has faced scrutiny for years for alleged affiliations with foreign entities, including Russia, and a highly controversial visit with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Marshall's experiences within the SIF were not limited to farm work and listening to Butler's lectures. She also spent a significant amount of time cleaning. She recalled an incident where she was berated for selecting a cleaning product that Butler found too pungent. "I never did (meet Chris Butler) but we were always told we should be ready for him to appear," Marshall said. "How abusive Chris Butler was, I'm glad I never met him."

The SIF has its roots in the teachings of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and the Hare Krishna movement. After Butler broke away from the movement, he formed his own group with followers from Hawaii, Australia, and Southeast Asia. The group's practices and beliefs have been described as a Westernized version of the ancient Gaudiya Vaishnava Hindu tradition.

Butler's influence extended beyond his audio lectures. He reportedly lived in a beachfront property in Hawaii, separate from the commune where Marshall and others resided. The house was described as an eyesore due to its tinfoil covering, which was allegedly meant to "keep out germs." Butler also had people regularly feed him and tend to his laundry.

An anonymous source, who claims to have joined the group at the age of 17, described their time in the SIF as "very highly stressful." They worked primarily in the kitchen, cooking for Butler and his wife during their decade-long trips to Hawaii. The source also revealed a demand for scraps of Butler's food and his used belongings, which were considered "mahaprasada," or very holy.

The anonymous source also spoke about the Gabbards, stating that they did not have servants like Butler but lived comfortably in their two- or three-bedroom apartment. The source also suggested that Gabbard has a chance of becoming the next leader of the SIF due to her status as an "advanced devotee."

In response to inquiries about Gabbard's current status within the SIF, Michael Brannon Parker, an acquaintance of the Gabbard family, stated that he had "no idea" of her current participation in the group's activities. He also suggested that the focus on Gabbard's ties to the SIF was a tactic used "by the political elite to protect their vested interests."

Marshall, however, expressed doubt that Gabbard has left the group. "There's claims that she left. There's no way that she left because you would know. She would've been shunned," she said. "None of her family would talk to her anymore. You don't just leave without being shunned. It's a lifelong commitment."

Gabbard has publicly acknowledged her ties to the SIF. In a 2015 address to honor the Hare Krishna 50th anniversary, she referred to Butler as her "beloved grandfather" and "spiritual master." She also expressed her gratitude to Butler for the "gift of this wonderful spiritual practice that he has given to me, and to so many people."

As Gabbard prepares for a confirmation hearing with the U.S. Senate, the anonymous source warned of Butler's potential influence over the former lawmaker. "I think it's a very dangerous position," they said. "I do not see how she will not either leak classified information to Butler and...or he won't influence her in her position."

This story raises questions about the influence of religious groups on political figures and the potential implications for national security. It also highlights the need for transparency in the relationships between politicians and the organizations to which they belong. As the confirmation hearing approaches, these issues will likely continue to be a topic of discussion.
