Hannity's proposal, aired during a conversation with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, involves offering illegal migrants a sum of $1,000 and a plane ticket if they voluntarily disclose their immigration status. This proposition comes in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's commitment to implement the most extensive mass deportation program in the history of the United States, aimed at curbing illegal immigration and cracking down on cartels implicated in human smuggling.
As reported by Newsweek, Hannity, on November 20, underscored the importance of law and order in the United States, stating, "We have a Constitution, we're a nation based on laws, and if people do not respect our laws, our borders, and our sovereignty, you pay a price. In this case, the price is you will get sent home." He further argued that Trump's mass deportation policy could be executed "humanely," suggesting a compassionate approach that would allow individuals to self-identify their illegal status. Hannity elaborated, "If they do so, give them a plane ticket, put $1,000 in their pocket, and send them home and say, 'You know if you want to come back, you can come back legally.' If people don't voluntarily come forward, those people will never be given the opportunity to come back to America."
TRUMP TRANSITION: WHEN YOU LOSE ALL TRUST IN THE FBI, THIS HAPPENS...
Trump's campaign, which was largely centered on immigration and border security, has sparked widespread debate. Hector Quiroga, an immigration attorney, warned of the potentially "disruptive" economic impact of Trump's proposed mass deportation policy. He noted, "Undocumented immigrants play a crucial role in industries like agriculture, construction, hospitality, and food services. Removing millions of workers could result in labor shortages, increasing operational challenges and costs for businesses."

Public opinion on the issue of deportations has seen a significant shift, with a CNN poll indicating a 20-point increase in support from 2017 to 2024. However, a recent survey by the progressive polling organization Data for Progress suggests that the majority of Americans are against the idea of deporting all illegal immigrants. The survey, which involved 1,195 likely voters and was conducted between October 23 and 25, presented nine potential scenarios to gauge public support for the "mass deportation" concept championed by Trump during his campaign. Only two scenarios garnered the backing of more than half of the respondents.

Danielle Deiseroth, executive director at Data for Progress, cautioned against misinterpretation of polls showing voter support for mass deportation. She stated, "While Trump has not been specific about what his mass deportation plans would entail, our polling finds that voters do not support a mass deportation of all undocumented immigrants in the U.S. When you actually dig into the details, voters think that many types of immigrants—both documented and undocumented—should be allowed to remain in the country." This underscores the complexity of the immigration issue and the need for a nuanced approach that respects both the rule of law and the economic realities of the country.
