In a significant escalation of tensions near the NATO border with Ukraine, Poland was compelled to deploy fighter jets in response to Russia's "massive" aerial assault on Kyiv's energy infrastructure.

The Polish military confirmed early Sunday that "Polish and allied aircraft have begun operating in our airspace" following Russia's onslaught on Ukraine involving cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as drones.

According to Newsweek, Russia's attacks have occasionally encroached on NATO members such as Poland and Romania, which share borders with western and southern Ukraine, particularly when Moscow has targeted Ukraine's western regions. In response to the escalating threat, Warsaw's armed forces "activated all available forces and resources," which included scrambling on-duty fighter jets and elevating ground-based air-defense systems and radars to "the highest state of readiness," as stated by the military. The alert was lifted once Russia concluded its strikes on Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed early Sunday that Moscow had initiated "a massive, combined attack" involving approximately 120 missiles and 90 drones across Ukraine. The Russian arsenal included several types of missiles, such as the hypersonic Zircon and Kinzhal missiles, and the Iranian-designed Shahed strike drones. Zelensky reported that Kyiv had intercepted "over 140" of the incoming targets.

The Ukrainian leader also disclosed that drone attacks in Ukraine's southern Mykolaiv region resulted in two fatalities and six injuries, including two children. Mykolaiv regional Governor Vitaliy Kim confirmed that two women were killed, seven people were injured, and several buildings were destroyed. Ukraine's state emergency service reported one death and two injuries in the western Lviv region.

Zelensky's statement also highlighted that over the past week, the aggressor had deployed nearly 140 missiles of various types, more than 900 guided aerial bombs, and over 600 strike drones. He praised the efforts of their F-16 pilots who managed to shoot down approximately 10 aerial targets.

Ukraine's air force reported that Russia had launched one Zircon hypersonic cruise missile, eight Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, and more than 100 Kalibr and Kh-101 cruise missiles, among others. Ukraine managed to down 102 of the missiles and 42 of the drones, with the air force stating, "Air defense worked in almost all regions of Ukraine."

Russia's Defense Ministry acknowledged carrying out "a massive strike with high-precision, long-range air- and sea-based weapons and strike drones" in the early hours of Sunday. The Russian government stated that it targeted Kyiv's "critical energy infrastructure facilities that supported the operation of Ukraine's military-industrial complex and enterprises producing military products," and claimed that "All planned targets were hit."

Zelensky confirmed that "Unfortunately, some facilities sustained damage from direct hits and falling debris." Ukrainian officials had anticipated Russian attacks on the country's vital energy infrastructure as winter approached. Kyiv has been appealing to its Western allies for more air defenses to intercept missiles and drones.

Ukrainian Energy Minister, Herman Halushchenko, reported early on Sunday that Russia had targeted generators and electrical transmitters across the country, causing power outages. Zelensky expressed gratitude to all air defense units that participated in repelling the attack, stating, "anti-aircraft missile forces, our aviation—pilots of F16s, Su aircraft, and MiGs, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare units—all worked together in an organized and coordinated manner."

Kyiv's authorities described the attack as the most "powerful blow" from Russia in nearly three months. Kyiv Mayor, Vitalii Klitschko, reported that one woman had been hospitalized after a drone fragment struck a residential building. Ukraine's state-owned railway operator also reported that Russian attacks on a depot in the central Dnipropetrovsk region overnight had resulted in two fatalities and three injuries.
