Welby, who also presided over the coronation of King Charles III and the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, is stepping down due to the abhorrent crimes committed by John Smyth, a former church camp operator.

According to The New York Post, Welby acknowledged the Makin Report, an independent investigation into the scandal, which was released last Friday. The report "has exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses" committed by Smyth, who passed away in 2018, in Britain and South Africa.

Smyth, who operated children's camps associated with the Church of England, is believed to have sexually abused as many as 130 boys and young men in Britain and Africa. Welby has been at the helm of the Church since 2013.

"When I was informed in 2013 and told that police had been notified, I believed wrongly that an appropriate resolution would follow," Welby confessed. He also leads the global Anglican Communion, which includes the US's Episcopal Church. The Archbishop accepted both personal and institutional responsibility for the "long and re-traumatizing period between 2013 and 2024."

The release of the Makin Report sparked outrage across Britain. Despite initially stating he would not resign, Welby faced mounting pressure to do so over the weekend. The Archbishop's office informed The Post that the "precise timings" of his departure would be announced following "a review of [his] necessary obligations."

This scandal underscores the importance of swift and decisive action in the face of such grave allegations, a lesson that institutions of all kinds would do well to heed.
