The Democratic Party, still reeling from Kamala Harris' unexpected defeat in the recent presidential election, is already looking ahead to the 2028 race.

The loss has sparked a wave of introspection and frustration within the party, prompting calls for a strategic reassessment and a fresh face to lead the Democrats back to victory. Among the potential contenders, New York representative Hakeem Jeffries, the current House Minority Leader, is emerging as a strong candidate.

According to the Daily Mail, Brett Bruen, a former Obama White House official, has identified Jeffries as a potential frontrunner. "Hakeem Jeffries, if he is able to ascend to the speakership, is the clear next leader," Bruen stated.

Other possible candidates, such as governors Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, and Gretchen Whitmer, may also throw their hats into the ring. However, Jeffries could have an advantage if he secures the Speakership and establishes himself in a leadership role.

Bruen expressed concern about the party veering too far left, emphasizing the need for a candidate who can reconnect with Middle America. "The next Democratic leader must resonate with voters in regions where the party struggled this time," he told The Sun, underscoring the importance of regaining trust among working-class voters.

Kamala Harris, who positioned herself as an underdog against her Republican rival, Donald Trump, is unlikely to remain a central figure in the party following her defeat. Some speculate that she might run for a California senate seat, but Bruen believes the scale of her loss effectively ends her political career. "I don't think, after the debacle of last week, you can make another run for the presidency," Bruen said.

The defeat has also cast doubt on the influence of the Clintons and Obamas, who were instrumental in securing Harris' nomination. Their political machines, once considered indispensable, may now be seen as liabilities. The Democratic Party, increasingly divided between its progressive and moderate wings, may be ready for a change in direction.

Calls for a complete overhaul of the Democratic Party have been coming from both donors and voters. "The party lied to the American people about the cognitive health and fitness of the president," said hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, a longtime Democratic donor who endorsed Trump in 2024, "and then didn't hold a primary to replace him."

The party's defeat to Trump marks the second such loss in the past three elections. David Plouffe, senior adviser to the campaign, described it as a "devastating loss," referencing Biden's weak polls before he dropped out of the race.

Bruen emphasized the need for the party to avoid a lengthy internal battle that could further split the party and weaken its position. "We need to focus on building a clear and cohesive message, not on infighting," he said. He also noted that the election results highlight deep flaws within the Democratic Party's approach, and called for a quick regrouping to prevent any long-term damage.

Bruen believes the Democrats have lost touch with working-class voters and those in rural areas, allowing the Republicans to control the narrative. He criticized the party's strategy of focusing heavily on progressive social issues without adequately addressing economic and cultural concerns.

Looking ahead, Bruen stressed the importance of learning from past mistakes. He noted that Trump has positioned rising star Ohio Senator and Vice President-elect JD Vance as his "heir apparent," poised to take over the MAGA mantle once Trump finishes his second term in 2028. "This is clearly Trump's victory, and it will be interesting to see what happens after Trump leaves office, and you have another Republican run for the presidency," Bruen said.

Bruen's comments underscore the urgency of the moment for the Democrats. As they grapple with an uncertain future, the party must reassess its strategy, reconnect with its base, and identify a leader who can guide them back to victory in 2028.
