Donald Trump's recent triumph over Kamala Harris in the presidential race has not only secured him the title of President-elect but also earned him the moniker of "Teflon Don," according to an opinion editorial by Delano Squires in The Blaze.

This title, originally associated with mafia boss John Gotti, signifies that no accusations or attacks from Democrats, media, pop culture, or corporate America could tarnish Trump's reputation or prevent his victory.

Squires argues that the pundit class, in their attempts to portray Trump as a fascist, Nazi-sympathizing, authoritarian dictator, have failed to understand the average American. Despite Democrats' efforts to use the legal system to keep Trump out of the White House, and despite criticisms of his vice presidential pick, Trump's victory was inevitable.

Trump's campaign was not without controversy. His criticism of state abortion bills and public attacks on the conservatives behind Project 2025 upset his base. The decision to give a speaking slot at the Republican National Convention to Amber Rose, an atheist, pro-abortion influencer, also displeased some social conservatives. However, voters still chose Trump, despite being labeled as bigots by Democrats.

Squires suggests that Democrats' attempts to use race and sex as tools to attract voters failed. Instead, Trump managed to build a diverse, working-class coalition. His support among Latino voters increased from 28% in 2016 to 46% in 2024, including 55% of Latino men. Trump also won 20% of the black male vote and 53% of the white female vote nationally.

The opinion editorial criticizes the pundit class for their arrogance and inability to understand the average American. Squires accuses them of living in a bubble, unable to comprehend the world outside their identity and power dynamics. He cites a conversation with a progressive woman who suggested that social conservatives are only pro-life due to fear of a declining white birth rate, despite the fact that approximately 40% of aborted babies in America are black.

Squires expresses cautious optimism about what Trump's victory could mean for social issues. He acknowledges that the Republican party's broad tent, accommodating figures as diverse as Caitlyn Jenner and Franklin Graham, could lead to policy positions that alienate some voters. However, he emphasizes that this election was about Trump and the voters who rejected the narratives of politicians, entertainers, and media figures. According to Squires, Americans have sent a clear message to the elites that power belongs to the people.
