In a significant move towards advancing space exploration, Texas A&M University is poised to establish a unique research facility dedicated to lunar and Martian missions.

The university's board of regents has greenlit a $200 million budget for the creation of the University Space Institute, a decision that promises to revolutionize the field of space research.

As reported by Newsweek, the institute will be erected on a 32-acre plot at the gateway to the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The facility will feature landscapes designed to replicate the terrains of the moon and Mars, each spanning an area equivalent to the size of Texas' Kyle Field college football stadium, the fourth-largest in the U.S.

The university's esteemed school of veterinary medicine is also set to gain from a $181-million teaching and research complex included in the package. The new facility, whose construction will begin early next year, is expected to ease the burden on Texas A&M's Small Animal Teaching Hospital, which currently handles around 24,000 cases annually, despite being designed for a caseload of merely 6,000.
