In a bid to resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, former President Donald Trump may propose the establishment of an 800-mile demilitarized zone, according to insiders.

This zone, which would be patrolled by British and European forces, would solidify Russia's territorial gains in Ukraine, effectively freezing the current border.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the plan, which has been outlined by three Trump staffers, would require Kyiv to commit to not joining NATO for the next two decades. In exchange, the US would arm Ukraine to prevent Russia from reigniting the war. However, the responsibility of financing and manning the buffer zone would fall solely on Ukraine's European allies.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his concerns about the proposed plan, warning that any attempt to end the war by appeasing Russia would be 'suicide' for Europe. A member of Trump's team echoed this sentiment, stating, "We can do training and other support but the barrel of the gun is going to be European. We are not sending American men and women to uphold peace in Ukraine. And we are not paying for it. Get the Poles, Germans, British and French to do it."

The Trump team has yet to outline how they would bring both parties to the negotiation table, but there have been various suggestions from his advisers on how to resolve the conflict. Sergei Shoigu, a top Russian security official, stated that the situation in the combat zone in Ukraine is not in Kyiv's favor and urged the West to accept this and negotiate an end to the conflict.

Trump has previously claimed that the Russia-Ukraine war would never have started under his presidency and that he could bring the conflict to an abrupt halt. However, he has not revealed his plans for doing so. Meanwhile, Britain, France, and Germany have pledged their support to Ukraine 'for as long as it takes,' and Zelensky is firmly against ceding territory to Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky stated that making any concessions to Putin would be 'unacceptable for Ukraine' and 'suicidal for Europe.' Given this stance, it seems unlikely that such a plan could be implemented without strong-arming Kyiv with threats of withholding much-needed US military aid. This could significantly undermine Washington's relations with Europe and question the legitimacy of NATO.

Analysts and politicians have warned that such a move could embolden countries like China to exploit the perceived disunity in the West and expand its influence in the Pacific. While fears that Trump might seek to withdraw from NATO altogether are considered overblown, analysts have warned that Trump is likely to reduce US military aid to Ukraine, forcing Kyiv's European partners to shoulder a significant burden to maintain an adequate supply of arms.

Dr. Russell Foster, Senior Lecturer in British and International Politics at King's College London, told MailOnline, "Trump does have a legitimate point about European allies having underperformed in defense and over-relied on Uncle Sam to protect them for too long, and this is a huge wake-up call to the West." However, he also noted that Europe, Canada, and Australasia have let their defense spending stagnate for so long that they lack the industrial base and military infrastructure to defend Ukraine and themselves from further aggression without American help.

The future of Western defense is now looking very bleak, with major calls for defense spending and investment across NATO. However, this will take years to build up and be hugely expensive at a time of economic stagnation. Ed Arnold, Senior Research Fellow for European Security at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) think-tank, added, "The immediate crisis within Europe will be how to continue diplomatic, military and humanitarian support to Ukraine without the US."

French President Emmanuel Macron echoed these sentiments at a European leaders' gathering this week, stating that the continent 'must not delegate forever our security to America.' He argued that Trump would legitimately 'defend the interests of the American people' and asked: 'Are we ready to defend the interests of the European people?'

The Foreign Office and No 10 Downing Street have been contacted for comment on the buffer zone claims. As the world watches, the question remains: Can a balance be struck that respects Ukraine's sovereignty while also addressing Russia's concerns? Only time will tell.
