The U.S. Army announced on Monday the tragic passing of Sgt. Quandarius Davon Stanley, a 23-year-old soldier who sustained injuries during a humanitarian mission in Gaza earlier this year.

Stanley, who was attached to the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, was one of three servicemen injured in non-combat incidents during the mission. While his comrades returned to duty shortly after, having suffered only minor injuries, Stanley's condition necessitated extended medical care, as reported by the New York Post.

According to The Post Millennial, Capt. Shkeila Milford-Glover, a spokesperson for the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, stated, "Stanley was injured while supporting the mission that delivered humanitarian aid to Gaza in May 2024 and was receiving treatment in a long-term care medical center." Following his injury, Stanley was transferred to the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, for treatment. Owing to the severity of his injuries, Stanley was medically retired, unable to return to active service. His battle ended on October 31 when he passed away.

The mission Stanley was part of was an initiative by the Biden-Harris administration to bolster aid access to Gaza amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict. Despite frequent logistical and weather-related challenges, the mission managed to keep the pier operational for approximately 20 days, delivering over 19 million pounds of aid.

Col. John “Eddie” Gray, commander of the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), paid tribute to Stanley on Monday, saying, “Sgt. Quandarius Stanley was an instrumental and well-respected first line leader in the 7th Transportation Brigade Expeditionary (TBX), especially during the mission to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. We will continue to provide support to his family during this difficult time. Our entire unit mourns alongside his family.”

Vice Adm. Bradley Cooper, deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, had initially confirmed Stanley’s injury along with those of the other troops back in May. He disclosed that one soldier was being treated at a hospital in Israel after an injury sustained on a ship at sea, although the specifics of Stanley’s injury remain undisclosed. However, it has been clarified that his injury was non-combat related.

A recent Government Accountability Office report highlighted significant maintenance and readiness issues with U.S. Army watercraft, including those involved in the pier mission, due to “aging vessels, supply shortages, and obsolete parts.” Stanley's obituary paints a picture of a man who has left “a void in the hearts of many” and was “loved and cherished by many people.”
