This claim is part of a broader report by the U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee, which scrutinized the handling of anti-Israel protests on 11 college campuses this year.
According to The Post Millennial, the report alleges that Schumer told then-Columbia University President Minouche Shafik that the university's "political problems are really only among Republicans." Schumer's staff reportedly suggested that the most effective strategy for the university would be to "keep heads down."
The committee's investigation also uncovered that several Ivy League universities, including Columbia, Harvard, Yale, and Northwestern, made a deliberate choice to omit language condemning the horrific rape, torture, and execution of over 1,200 civilians, as well as the kidnapping of 250 more, from their official statements following the atrocities. References to Israeli hostages were also conspicuously absent.

Despite the committee's review of private emails and text messages, Schumer's spokesman, Angelo Roefaro, has dismissed the report as "flat-out false." Roefaro defended Schumer's stance on antisemitism, telling the New York Post, "Senator Schumer regularly and forcefully condemned antisemitic acts at Columbia and elsewhere saying 'when protests shift to antisemitism, verbal abuse, intimidation, or glorification of October 7 violence against Jewish people, that crosses the line.' He conveyed this point publicly and to administrators privately."

Roefaro also pointed out that the Republicans were citing words from someone who is not Chuck Schumer, a practice he referred to as hearsay.

The report further revealed that Columbia trustees derided the committee for scrutinizing their response to the campus antisemitism and violence. They exchanged texts expressing their hope that Democrats would gain control of Congress. Board of Trustees co-chairs David Greenwald and Claire Shipman, in texts with Shafik, described Schumer as "very positive and supportive (and quite the storyteller)." This apparent endorsement from Schumer reportedly emboldened Columbia's leadership to avoid meetings with Republicans, as Schumer and his staff had suggested that such discussions were unnecessary.

The report also detailed a disturbing rise in antisemitism on Columbia's campus following the Hamas atrocities in Israel. Jewish students were subjected to assault, stalking, verbal abuse, and death threats. This culminated in a violent Gaza camp that lasted for weeks, according to a report released by the university in August.

Pro-terror activists occupied the university's Hamilton Hall in April, trapping janitorial staff and others inside. Over 100 people were arrested after police regained control of the building. Antisemitic vandalism continued into the new school year.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Sapraicone responded to the House Committee's report, stating, "The recent report from the House Committee on Education and the Workforce demonstrates how the Democrats speak out of both sides of their mouths. The reports of Sen. Schumer dismissing blatant violence and antisemitism are exactly why I’m running to replace his counterpart, who is just a rubber stamp. Election Day will prove that Americans won’t tolerate any longer.”
