In a surprising turn of events, the Biden-Harris administration, despite Vice President Kamala Harris's pro-Second Amendment stance during her 2024 campaign, has recently called for a ban on so-called "assault weapons."

This move has raised eyebrows, given Harris's previous attempts to position herself as a champion of gun rights.

According to The Post Millennial, the Biden-Harris White House account posted a graphic on social media on Wednesday, stating, "It's time to ban assault weapons." This comes as a stark contrast to Harris's previous statements on gun ownership. During a 60 Minutes interview, Harris stated, “I have a Glock and I’ve had it for quite some time. My background is in law enforcement, so there you go.” When asked if she had ever fired it, Harris responded with a laugh, “Yes, of course I have, at a shooting range."

However, Harris's past legislative actions paint a different picture. As a matter of fact, the laws she supported and advocated for in California could have potentially rendered her own firearm illegal during her tenure as San Francisco's district attorney. Harris has also been a consistent supporter of bans on "high-capacity" magazines. For instance, she backed Proposition H in California in 2006, which, according to National Review, would ban “all City residents, without exception, from selling, distributing, transferring and manufacturing firearms and ammunition."

Furthermore, Harris signed an amicus brief in the DC vs Heller case, arguing that “The Second Amendment applies only to federal legislation, not to legislation of the states or local governments,” and that “the Second Amendment provides only a militia-related right to bear arms.” Her track record also includes support for a mandatory gun buyback program for "assault weapons."

Despite this, Harris has maintained during her campaign that she does not support any measures to confiscate "anybody's guns." She even suggested on Oprah that if someone were to break into her house, "They gettin' shot." However, her campaign later retracted this statement, claiming it was made in jest.

This recent call for an "assault weapons" ban by the Biden-Harris administration, therefore, raises questions about the sincerity of Harris's pro-Second Amendment stance. It also underscores the need for a clear and consistent approach to gun rights, one that respects the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens while addressing the legitimate concerns about gun violence.
