Steve Bannon, a longstanding ally of former President Donald Trump, was released from prison early on Tuesday after serving a four-month sentence for defying a subpoena related to the congressional investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Bannon, 70, had reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, on July 1, after his bid to delay the prison sentence while appealing his conviction was rejected by the Supreme Court.

According to The Associated Press, Bannon was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress in 2022. One count was for refusing to sit for a deposition with the House Committee investigating the January 6 incident, and the other was for refusing to provide documents related to his involvement in Trump's efforts to overturn his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race.

Bannon, upon starting his sentence in July, declared himself a "political prisoner." He stated, "I am proud of going to prison," adding that he was standing up against Attorney General Merrick Garland and a "corrupt" Justice Department.

The former Trump ally is expected to hold a news conference later in the day in Manhattan, as reported by his representatives. He is also anticipated to resume his podcast on Tuesday.

Bannon's convictions were upheld by a federal appeals court panel in May. He is currently requesting the full appeals court to hear his case. His legal team has argued that the congressional subpoena was invalid due to Trump's assertion of executive privilege. However, prosecutors counter this claim, stating that Bannon had left the White House years prior and that Trump had never invoked executive privilege in front of the committee.
